  • Theme Year Student Innovation Competition

    The committee for the Academic Theme Year: Innovation in the Liberal Arts announces a student competition in interdisciplinary innovation at St. Olaf College.
    First Prize: $700
    Second Prize: $300
    To enter the competition, students must do the following:
    1. Form a team of two or more students from different disciplinary backgrounds;*
    2. Identify a component of our college that needs to be developed, revised, or improved;
    3. Generate a creative and original proposal for this change.  The proposal need not be carried out, but must be practicable.
    *These interdisciplinary teams and proposals must draw from departments and programs in at least two of the five major divisions of the college: Humanities, Fine Arts, Interdisciplinary and General Studies, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences.
    Deadline:
    To compete students should provide an ‘Intent to Submit’ by March 18, 2013 by completing the submission form below and providing a one page outline of their intended project (including collaborators names, majors and class year and a proposed timeline of activities).

    The final deadline is April 21, 2013.

     GUIDELINES:

    1. Project subject matter is open. It might include such activities as the following: demonstration of complex understanding of a subject by approaching it through more than one disciplinary perspective; proposed solution to a problem (on campus or off) through application of knowledge from more than one academic discipline; creative work that utilizes material and/or theories gathered from more than one discipline.
    2.  Collaboration must involve at least two students, with majors in different disciplines.
    3. Faculty mentorship/oversight is encouraged.
